Designed by Miguel Milá, this lamp marked a milestone in establishing Spanish design as a professional discipline. The jury that year was chaired by Max Bill—a renowned Swiss artist and designer and a passionate advocate of the Ulm School—who reportedly championed the lamp with eloquence through each round of voting until it won the award. For this reason, a young Miguel Milá affectionately referred to it as the Max Bill lamp, though it eventually became known as the M64.
